Holderness is another one of those sleepy, little resort communities that might be short on man made amenities such as shopping plazas but got a double helping of natural amenities like peace, quiet, and stunning beauty. Holderness is known for Squam Lake, which is NH's second largest lake and was made famous by the 1980's film "On Golden Pond". I know, everybody says that, it is required!
Squam Lake covers 6,755 acres of water area with 67 islands to explore and is connected to Little Squam by a channel under Route 3. You'll find a great little restaurant called Walter's Basin overlooking the lake right there at the bridge. After lunch, you can rent a boat at the Squam Boat Livery and tour the lake or go around the corner to the 200 acre Squam Lake Science Center which provides a unique outdoor learning experience for young and old. The center has exhibit trails and features native New Hampshire wildlife in their natural environment.
You'll find the usual country store, gas station, and town offices in the middle of town. No major shopping here. Life is at a slower pace on Squam. We like it like that.
