Located just across the Winnipesaukee River from Tilton on the west side of Interstate 93 at Exit 19, this Merrimack County town is primarily a residential community. Northfield is an ideal location for commuting to Laconia, Concord, or points north.
The town has a nice residential area, a restaurant and country store just off Exit 19. It doesn’t take long to get out in the country on the scenic back roads that give Northfield its rural character and feel.
The outlet malls and supermarkets at Exit 20 are only five minutes away.
Traveling on I-93 you may see a large stone arch off the west side of the highway between Exit 19 and 20. Located in Northfield, this arch was not built by early Roman or Greek visitors as some of our residents in Northern NH foolishly believe. I wonder who started that one? It is a Roman Arch replica, but it was built by Major Charles Tilton in the late 1800’s as a memorial to his ancestors.
The arch is built of Concord granite and is 50’ high and 40’ wide. Mr. Tilton became one of the early heavy hitters of neighboring Tilton when he returned from the California gold rush a wealthy man. He endowed the Tilton School, another of the many prep schools in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. You would have thought that someone who went to California and back could have figured out that he was in Northfield and not in Tilton? The Tilton Arch Park is available for all kinds of functions and picnicking and is a great spot to watch Old Home Day fireworks!
