Sanbornton is a pretty cool town. Laid back, quiet, serene, picturesque, historical. All those clichés apply. It truly does embody all that one expects to find in an old New England town. You’ll find many original homes, churches and gathering buildings constructed by its earliest settlers. See if you can find the “Town Pound” in the historic district.
This very rural community is graced by stone walls, open fields and grazing livestock as well as a fair amount of frontage on Lake Winnisquam—my favorite. If you take Bay Road at the light at the Winnisquam Bridge (a.k.a. Mosquito Bridge) and then right on to Lower Bay Rd you’ll see Lake Winnisquam reappear on your right. All along Lower Bay there are small roads leading down to the lake with seasonal as well as year round homes dotting the shorefront. Go a little farther and you’ll come to Black Brook Rd on the right which continues around the lake into Meredith.
You’ll find stunning views of the mountains and Lake Winnisquam from Upper Bay Rd. The view at the top of the hill heading up to the Steel Hill Resort is amazing. Sanbornton offers a rural life-style and never ending charm to its residents, yet its close proximity to exit 20 off I-93 offers unlimited conveniences, shopping and restaurant choices.
I’m not related to any of the other Sanborns that live in the town. I’m from a different part of the state. I’ve always wanted to live there but never found the perfect house. I was going to buy one house that I found there which happened to be on Sanborn Road. Decided it would be pushing the whole name thing a little too far!
