Sandwich is another one of those quaint New England villages with a double dose of white antique capes, colonials, and farmhouses. The place has always been a retreat for summer visitors from far and wide and now has many artisans and fine craftsman among its full time residents.
You can get there by taking Bean Road at the lights in Center Harbor or by heading north on Rt 109 from the village of Moultonborough. Both routes will take you to the center of the village. The widely popular Sandwich Fair is held here every fall. Enjoy the exhibits, tractor pulling, cotton candy, fried dough, and fantastic fall scenery!
Sandwich is home to the Corner House Restaurant which is a great place to get lunch. Despite a popular myth (that I am promoting) that claims the town was named for the great sandwiches provided in this restaurant at lunch time, the fact is that Sandwich was named in honor of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. It was the Earl that actually invented the sandwich. True story! Sandwich is also located in the Sandwich Range of mountains, with seventeen listed peaks, including Sandwich Dome (which you'd think must be named after glass dome used to cover the sandwiches in the store, right?).
You can take Rt 113 west out of the village and it will take you around the north side of Squam Lake. There is some great scenery and homes to look at along the lake. You'll end up coming out right at the Squam Lake Science Center in Holderness.
If you're looking for a real secluded get-a-way, a place so laid back you might have to sleep 'til noon, Sandwich could be right for you.
