Upon first arriving in Wolfeboro you immediately are taken with how beautiful and charming this town is. The Main Street is lined with white colonial homes leading into an area of quaint shops, restaurants, and ice cream stands down by the bay and docks.
Vacationers have been coming for years to this lakeside retreat nestled between southeastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee and notable Lake Wentworth. Lake Wentworth was named for one of the first "vacationers" here. Governor John Wentworth built his vacation home in 1771 on its shore thus giving rise to the town's claim of being the "oldest summer resort in America". Lake Wentworth is a very popular alternative to "Winni" for those looking for something a little quieter and less congested.
You can sit down by the waterfront and watch the comings and goings of the island folk and other mariners who come to this port for supplies or perhaps lunch and shopping. You will chuckle at the novice boaters who struggle a bit getting their boat to go where they want it to. There are some pretty amusing sights sometimes. The M/S Mt. Washington docks here as well and offers tours of all that Lake Winnipesaukee has to offer. My favorite perch is from the Upper Deck at Joe Green's where you can enjoy a sandwich and drink while staring out at the shimmering bay.
Wolfeboro is an affluent, upscale community. The town website proclaims that it has the 17th highest per capita income in the country. I guess I would believe that given the price of homes there. According to the website, the kids' SAT scores are among the highest in the country and it is claimed that the town has the lowest crime rate in the country. I guess that proves that a good education will keep you away from a life of crime! Brewster Academy, a renowned prep school is located here on the shores of Winnipesaukee.
If you are up for a round of golf, Wolfeboro has a beautiful 18 hole public course with additional private courses just a short drive away. You can send the kids off to a museum to kill some time while you kill a few balls. The Wright Museum is all about WWII and there is the New Hampshire Boat Museum that you might want to see as well.
If you are looking for that great vacation home, waterfront estate, or retirement home Wolfeboro is certainly among the elite choices.
